FAQ

What age range of player can the Fielder’s Dome Mats™ be used with?

It can be used starting with T-Ball all the way to the major leagues! If you use the Fielder’s Dome Mat® frequently, your hand-eye coordination, positioning, lateral movement, and fielding ability will improve. It reinforces these important fundamentals in a short amount of practice time each day. It also prepares players for the unexpected bounce of the ball that occurs so frequently in games. The best players in any sport have worked to improve these fundamental skill sets. Our mat effectively assists players to develop these important skills faster than prior methods.  Best of all, the mat can easily be used at home.

What is the mat made from?

The actual mat is made from polyethylene, a lightweight, safe, and durable plastic. “PE” as it is also known as, is also used widely in many consumer products. It is non-toxic.

What are the domes made from?

The 9 domes are made from synthetic rubber which is completely safe.

Where is the Fielder’s Dome Mats made?

The mat is manufactured in China.

Are there any safety precautions I should take in using the mat?

Depending on your age, we suggest younger beginners wear a batter helmet with a face mask as the deflections off the domes are unpredictable. More experienced players do not need any protective head gear. The dome simulates unpredictable bounces and deflections which can occur in games. Parents and coaches can decide on who should wear a face mask and who should not.

How far back should the roller be from the mat?

It can vary depending on the age range of the fielder.  For youths in T-ball the roller can position themselves in front of the mat about 5-10 feet. The roller is as important as the fielder and with repetition the roller will be able to properly vary the speed of the ball.  For more advanced players, we recommend a distance between 10 – 15 feet in front of the mat.  You can check out all our videos on our website or on social media links.

How do I clean my mat?

Simple soap and water or mild household cleaner will work fine.

What surfaces will the mat produce the best performance?

The surface needs to be flat, like a manicured baseball or softball field. For natural turf, Bermuda grass is widely used on athletic fields. Find a suitable area in the outfield or along the base lines where the turf is maintained short and flat. For clay infield use, we recommend clay which is raked first and is as flat as possible. The mat also works great on artificial turf as well as concrete driveways. The mat will not work with long grasses such as St. Augustine, or Bahia grass as the grass is too high and thick to allow the ball to maintain its speed. The key to effective practice sessions is to ensure the ball rolls on as flat a surface as possible because the sewn seams in both baseballs and softballs also influence the movement of the ball.

How many deflections can I expect in a practice session?

That depends on how much time you dedicate to a session. Our ambassador staff recommends using the mat for at least 10-minute to 15-minute warm-up sessions each day to improve your skill level.  In a typical ten-minute session, you can field about 75 balls or more. Out of that an average of 60% - 70% will deflect off the domes with the remainder passing through. It is random, which is what you want as it simulates game conditions.

What if a dome pops off?

Simply re-insert it. The owner’s manual has instructions on how to do it.
