The Core Technique of Blocking

1. Athletic Stance

Begin with your stance. Position your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and weight balanced. Your body should be relaxed yet ready to spring into action. This stance allows for quick lateral movements and stability when dropping into a block.

2. Anticipating the Pitch is Key

Quick reflexes are great, but anticipation is better. Train yourself to read the trajectory of the ball as soon as it leaves the pitcher’s hand. This foresight allows you to position yourself effectively and react with precision.  Stay engaged with the pitcher and anticipate the ball’s trajectory. Your mindset should shift from merely catching to controlling any ball that might get away. Always be prepared to transition swiftly from your stance to a blocking position.

3. Get Low and Centered

When you see a ball coming in low, immediately drop into a squat position. Keep your chest over your knees and your glove between your legs. This stance centers your body and gives you stability, ensuring you're a solid wall against the incoming pitch. When the pitch comes in low or wild, drop your body swiftly into a blocking position. Your knees should hit the ground simultaneously, creating a wide base. Make sure your glove is between your legs, and your chin is tucked towards your chest to protect your neck and throat.

4. Create a Wall

Your body is the wall that stops the ball! Keep your chest forward and glove down, creating a barrier. The goal is to have the ball hit your chest protector and fall right in front of you, making for easy retrieval.

5. Create a Wide Base

Spread your knees apart and keep your feet flat. A wide base gives you balance and stops you from toppling over, allowing you to absorb the ball's impact with ease.

6.Chest Over the Ball

Lean forward slightly so that your chest is angled downward. Your chest protector should be the primary surface for deflecting the ball downwards, minimizing the chance of it bouncing too far from your grasp.

7. Absorb the Impact

Use your body to cushion the impact. Relax your muscles slightly to absorb shock and reduce the ball's rebound distance. This technique not only stops the ball but also keeps it within arm's reach.

8.Secure the Ball

Once the ball hits your chest protector, stay calm. Trap the ball with your glove and scoop it up with your throwing hand for a quick recovery. This not only secures the ball but prepares you for the next play.

 9.  Quick Recovery

After blocking the ball, spring back into action. Locate the ball quickly and get up to make the play. Your agility in this moment can stop runners from advancing and keep the game under your control.
